Evaluation

I think over all my experimental video turned out better than i hoped in some ways but in other i don't think it turned out well, this is because my initial idea, being the animatic is slightly different to my Installation piece this is because of difficulties i pointed out in my diary being, the stop motion pentagram and the sky shots but I think even though I had these problems the video turned out for the better furthermore when i tried to make the whole film black and white the video clips kept going distorted and blurry so after several attempts i gave up, I think the Concept for my piece remained the same, being dealing with personal loneliness and feeling like some one who your not, but I don't really think my concept is portrayed that well because to the casual observer it would look like a bunch of random clips but for some who 'think out side of the box' could potentially get what I was trying to portray but overall I still think the concept would be difficult to grasp but even with this though, I did not want the concept to be too obvious as this installation piece is incredibly personal and would have left me open for people to read which is not something I would like people to be able to do. I chose this concept above others because it was a way to express my self and personal feeling in a non obvious manner. My Installation piece was exhibited in college and at my hostel, i got mostly positive feedback but some of it was negative because people did not like the sound, this is because they either felt it droned on to long, was monotonic and, or creepy and some people did not Ike that even though people found my piece creepy that was the whole point of my video as my main inspiration about it is the short video in The Ring. If i had more time on piece i would have sorted out my sound properly instead of a piece i composed with in 5 minutes furthermore i would also, either make the film black and white, I take the time to saturate the piece to make the colour more dull, i think if i had done both of this my video would have been more successful and or better at least for me to elaborate further i would also put more time planning my exhibition. To conclude my video was overly successfully and i am pleased with the out come, most if not all my feedback was extremely helpful to me so i know where my weakness's are in making this piece.

Filming Diary 5- 30/11/2009

Today i completely finished everything for my production, the sound was done and my Experimental Video was complete, so with that i burned it onto a disk, after making the menu for the DVD, i tested it on the DVD player in college and found that it ran very well, later on i took it home and it also works very well at home much to my surprise, the only thing i now have to do is exhibit the piece at my hostel which shall take place on either Thursday and Friday. The only objection with my Experimental Video i have is i wanted to make it Black and white but it is too late to change it, but coincidentally i remembered that in my early attempts to change the Effects for the film, i found it never actually worked, the screen kept distorting and you couldn't see a thing.

Filming Diary 4- 23/11/2009

Today i actually had my tape, so i imported all the footage on to the MAC and used iMovie to edit and put all my clips together i enocountered alot of problems in thouse lessons because iMovie kept frezzing and shutting itself down, also the scene with the fly kept on no reversing and slowing down but eventually after 3 attempts i manged to completly finish my video, all the editing all that was left was my audio but to do that i shall just record a social disscustion and reverse it, to do this i shall also do it outside as it won't sound as dull because it will also capture the wind ect ect ect

Filming Diary 3- 16/11/2009

I forgot to bring my video tape into to college so in the end i couldn't really do any production work so i improvised and started to try and do my sound, but this was met with some difficulty because its hard to make sounds with out any video work to put it too furthermore i also filled in my logging sheet, after some debate i have decided i am going to re-write my production so it will be neater.

Filming Diary 2- 11/11/2009

As i had always intended, i wanted to take a shot of the sky but unfortunately due to the nature of the weather i was unable to do so because i finish college to late on the days i had the camera so it was dark before i could even think about filming so in the end i improvised, and instead recorded the sky from a window on the fourth floor in the tower block.

After i shot the sky for 5 minutes, i was about to pack the camera away but i saw a fly lying on he side obviously dying, so i decided i would record the fly twitching on it back for a few seconds. This would help with my video as it is something rather creepy and disturbing so a few people who view my video would be sickened by it so to speak.

I have decided to ue this shot instead of my stopmotion pentagram but i may still include a pentagram in my final video, i'm still deciding what is should appear like and how.

Filming Diary 1- 9/11/2009:

At 7:30 i started filming, the shots that were in my hostel. After setting up the camera i shot scenes 2 and 4 without any problems. After finishing this i attempted to film scenes 9 and 11, my stop motion sequence but encountered several problems with getting the right length and the same line thickness furthermore the paper kept moving so the shot wasn't exactly straight, after trying to do this for 30 minutes i gave up and i decided to re try at a later date.

At approx 9:30 i shot scene 7 after some difficulty acquiring some lighting so i could light the bottom of the cupboard, after i played back the scene it is evident that i will needs to crop the scene quite a bit. Shot 3 and 8 were done shortly after as well without encountering a problem the only problematic thing was i destroyed or ruined the only picture of me and my sisters...

365 by Lee Bamsey

365 is a collection of texts messages ranging over a year, the craft is quite original , the concept is extremely personal. The sound is extremely effective because its mysterious which sort of creeps the viewer out with this strange piece. The video always constantly changes and it goes through all of dates, it started and how long the the texts messages accumulated for hence the name 365, a whole year.

Gisele Kerozene

Gisele Kerozene starts off In the middle of a deserted modern city, three witch-like people are worshiping a strange sort of statue on a plinth. They are disturbed when a fourth witch steals the statue and takes off down the street on his broomstick. The others give chase but it will be a difficult chase that leaves only one winner. Gisele Kerozene utilizes stop motion furthermore Gisele Kerozene doesn't have any apparent concept.

Everything Turns by Matt Hattler

Everything Turns is about Time, life and death. The concept is rather basic but installation piece is very effective as it makes the viewer think about life, death and more importantly time. The Craft appears to be stop motion, even though the installation piece was overly short, the maker obviously get his point across that time is running. A very effective part of the video is when the man turn to dust and as his dust falls a tombstone is revealed.

Chapter 1- Discuss both past and current artists and works

Video installation pieces such a Gisele Kerozene and Muto are similar in the fact that they both utilize stop motion this appears to be the only similarity between the two. Muto and Doll Face are also similar because they both to do with real life views, such as Muto is about Re-birth whereas Doll Face is about Struggling with identity. Struggling with identity is a problem a lot of people struggle with as they are always influenced by someone else and in terms of how they act and dress so the video installation reflects upon real life, which also bears resemblance with Muto as i pointed out earlier, it has an idea of re-birth which yet again reflects upon real life views. Differences between the pieces are the Craft which is obvious because Doll Face is a computer animation whereas Muto and Gisele Kerozene are stop motion furthermore the Concepts differentiate as i explained above about the Concepts, The Concept for Gisele Kerozene is not really apparent as it is about witches on motorised broom racing.

Chapter 2- The use of technology and techniques and styles

In video installations, how they was made differ because of the time they was made, for example Doll Face by Andy Huang was made recently and the technology to develop that differs than pieces such as Gisele Kerozene, Doll Face is a computer animation which such technology wouldn't have existed in 1989 when Gisele Kerozene was made furthermore was made with stop motion. Stop motion would have been good technology a the time of Gisele Kerozene, stop motion being difficult would have probably only been used for quite higher budget video installation pieces.

Chapter 3- Narrative and non-narrative structures

Some video installation have quite obvious narrative structures like Gisele Kerozene whereas some video installation have non-narrative structures like Girl Chewing Gum. Another stop motion video installation entitled Muto by Blu, doesn't really have a narrative structure compared to the other stop motion we have looked at called Gisele Kerozene. The two installation pieces are similar in the fact that they both utilize stop motion but this is where the apparent similarity ends as Gisele Kerozene doesn't have any apparent concept whereas Muto, visually points at the idea of rebirth as the stop motion has a cycle of life then death then life again.

Chapter 6- Audience and audience interpreatation

Any piece of art can be interpreted any way by anyone, this is because each person has there own individual thought therefore any person could see a piece of art as grotesque so to speak but another would see the piece of art as beauty. Furthermore people will always make there own interpretation with a piece of art but this would change the more they view it and also if there is a description provided with the art work and if there were any other person with them at the current time there interpretation would be shared so they would formulate an interpretation between them.

Chapter 5- How these works may inspire your own work

I have decided what I'm going to do in my experimental video, I'm going to be exploring themes of loneliness, aggression and emotion seclusion. The main idea for the video would be a visual and audio representation of my own personality. The whole film shall be filmed in black and white or in the production part i shall see if i can drain the colour so the colours will be quite dull, i shall also use a lot of subliminal messaging. The main inspiration for my experimental video was the little movie in the ring futhermore many of the pieces i saw such as Euolgy of Things left unsaid and Doll Face were further inspiration.

Eulogy for things left unsaid by Rob Chiu

Eulogy for things left unsaid by Rob Chiu is a very depressing piece of experimental video that explores the concept of loss and regrett. The video has a incredibley depressing atmosphere becuase it has depressing music and a very sorrowfull voice over futhermore the film use alot of woods and big open spaces which creates the feeling of lonliness, the over all colours also seems to be quite dull which was obviously done in the producing part of the film.

Koyaanisqatsi by Godfrey Reggio

Overview of visual images:
  • Has a very tribally look to it with shots of the Grand Canyon
  • There is a rocket also pace of the scene changes
  • Lots of destruction images and clips featuring Abandoned Building/Warehouses being leveled by explosives
  • Ghetto like environment is also shown in juxtaposition with the city
  • The visual images go back to footage of the rocket this time following it into the air until it explodes

Overview of Audio:
  • The music starts quite but changes pace/tempo whilst the images get more violent like and over time the music will decrease pace/tempo when the scene becomes peace full again
  • The only exception would be the last shot of the rocket again exploding, the music is the same tribal one from the beginning and has a juxtaposition with the footage on screen
The concept of the film could be:
To show new and old in a juxtaposition
  • Also to show fast and slow
  • Man-made and natural materials
  • Opposites

Chapter 4- The use of exhibition space to create meaning.

The use of space can effect the meaning a piece of art work has, this happens because, the space tends to create a different atmosphere for the casual observer, for example, a piece of art observed in a classroom would create a different feeling from observing the piece of art, say in an art gallery. In an art gallery the piece of art would feel more important as it would have been given some space and tends to stand alone, with other art works, around it within the room furthermore the atmosphere in an art gallery is quite like a library so you would be subconsciously conforming with the environment so the person would therefore speak more quietly etc whereas if the art work was viewed in a classroom the atmosphere always seems to be full of energy and general noise, so the piece off art wouldn't be deemed of any great importance to the casual observer. If a person wandered into a blackened room in an art gallery such as, Tate Modern, the person would feel they have entered a cinema like place thus causing them to go quite because people are trying to watch the video art. This same rule applies with everyday life because the cinema atmosphere has created a taboo to speak in a blackened area because of its association. One piece of art i saw was Anywhere Out Of The World By Phillip Parreno.

Doll Face by Andy Huang

Doll Face by Andy Huang, is a computer animation which appears to be quite shallow and basic but upon further investigation the viewer discovers that it has lot of depth, meaning and metaphors for todays reality. The short movie is primarily a craft but has a lot of hidden concepts, the movie starts with a metal t.v. and a metal box in front of it, as the computer animation progress, the metal box opens out to reveal a sort of jack in a box figure, the face is of a woman, who appears to struggle with identity, as she copies the face on the t.v. she slowly climbs futher up which would could show how far people could be willing to go to be perfect, at the end she reaches so high she can't go no futher but she ends up destroying herself, this could metaphorically represent that a part of her is holding her back from succeding which also relates into real life with the fact there is always something holdling you back from you achieving your end goals.
